Vietnam Cafe

People always ask me if I know how to cook. Don’t ask me why. Maybe because I’m Chinese and people think all Chinese know how to cook. Not me, but I do know how to eat. Invite me to a party and I will always bring my appetite. My friend Sun-Ki got me into the habit of taking pictures in restaurants. He runs a forum on Hawaii restaurants and food at He’s the expert. I just like to eat.
The great thing about Hawaii is the wide diversity of restaurants and types of food available. Downtown Honolulu is the place to be if you are looking for inexpensive, tasty lunch dishes. One of my favorites is the Vietnam Cafe on Hotel Street. This soup dish is a mix of crab, shrimp, noodles, egg and flavorful broth. The woman that waits on tables (the owner’s daughter, I think) always laughs at me because I order the same thing all the time. It’s good so why change. And you won’t believe the price, $5.00.

    Aloha Will. Thanks for the comment. I walked by the restaurant today and jotted down this name: Bun Rieu (without the diacriticals), in English it said: Crab Meat, Vegetable, Vermicelli Soup. Hope that helps. Chances are everyone has their own special recipe.

    That does look great, Burt. Great picture – a lot better framing than I could ever manage. IMHO the Vietnamese seafood soups are really outstanding, and it’s sad that more people don’t give them a try as a change of pace from pho.

    Speaking of Vietnamese restaurants, we had a good discussion at the eGullet Hawai`i board on Bac Nam, which I really do think is the best Vietnamese restaurant in town and certainly has the most unusual menu. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to have as many customers as it deserves, at least in the evening, so I urge all of you to try it out. . .
