GiRL FeST!

Studio 1 in downtown Honolulu is one of my favorite hangouts. Tonight Studio 1 hosted a fundraiser for GiRL FeST Hawaii, featuring MC Medusa & Feline Science. GiRL FeST! is the brainchild of one of my high school friends, the talented Kathryn Xian. The organization’s mission is raise awareness about violence to women in Hawaii. The statistics are appalling, and GiRL FeST! is a vocal proponent of women’s rights.

I don’t know how best to describe MC Medusa. She has enormous charisma on stage, and her lyrics are so real. It was one of the best hip-hop shows I’d ever been to, and I’ve seen my fair share of them. I wanted to get a better shot of Medusa on stage, but without a proper zoom lens and a Big Daddy flash, it wasn’t going to happen tonight. The crowd was really into it though. X Factor and the 2004 Hawaii Slam Team also performed earlier, but I arrived too late to catch them on stage.

The room with the stage was insanely hot, so I spent a good deal of time chilling in the bar. I amused myself by setting my camera on the table and taking 4 second exposures while sipping a vodka martini.

Kathryn and Yumiko from GiRL FeST! were cool enough to pose for a photo on our way out. We left Studio 1 and headed straight to the afterparty at 39 Hotel street. That in itself was an extremely interesting adventure, because the moment we set foot into 39 Hotel, we realized we were in a room full of naked people. Apparently, in addition to the GiRL FeST! afterparty, 39 Hotel was also hosting an underwear party. I briefly considered joining the buttcheek legion on the dance floor, but quickly remembered I was missing the button from the fly of my boxers. That would have been…bad. It was fun just kicking back though. I would have taken some photos, but I didn’t want to see what the dancing guy in the leopard print speedo and raccoon cap looked like under the flash.
