Singer songwriter Jack Johnson, a Hawaii resident had his newest album, the soundtrack from the film Curious George debut at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 album charts today. The CD has sold more than 130,000 units on its first week out. It is the first time any Hawaii musician has made a debut at #1 on the Billboard magazine main album charts. The lead off single, “Upside Down” is #1 on Honolulu radio station Star 101.9 FM (KUCD).

  • Johnson’s Soundtrack for “George” #1

The Advertiser story lists a number of chart milestones for various other Hawaii artists and musicians. For example, other Hawaii based artists to have hit number one on the Billboard charts have included in the past:

  • Brother IZ – several albums were #1 on the World Music charts.
  • Glenn Medeiros – hit #1 on the Hot 100 singles chart with rap star Bobby Brown in 1989.
  • Yvonne Elliman hit #1 with her single “If I Can’t Have You” from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack in the late 1970s.

Hitting #1 on the first week out at Billboard’s mainstream album chart is quite an accomplishment. Congratulations Jack. I am sure all of your fans and Hawaii residents are happy today.
