Don Tiki at Kapono’s

Call it lounge, call it exotica, call it kitsch, it’s all Don Tiki. This local band draws their musical heritage from musicians like Martin Denny (who was at this event), Arthur Lyman, Augie Colon. It’s all fun and definitely campy. Because of Hawai`i’s isolation few bands make it outside of the state. It’s rare to find a Braddah Iz (Israel Kamakawiwo`ole) or a Cecilio & Kapono that have broken into the mainland market. Not to say Don Tiki has, but they are certainly trying to expand their audience. Their gig at Kapono’s at the Aloha Tower Marketplace was a warmup performance for a couple of weekends in Las Vegas where they will play at Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville on the Strip. They’re schedule to be the headliner on Saturday, Oct. 16th and 23rd.

In typical fashion, the musicians, great as they are, remain in the background and give the show up to the Don Tiki Dancers. So, if you happen to be in Las Vegas and in the mood for some Tiki Lounge Culture, Margaritaville is the place to be.
