Ok, so I ended up checking out Lovefest at the Hawaiian Adventures water park late last night. Lovefest was a huge “party” featuring a number of deejays, famous and not-so-famous, spinning on 3 stages. I figured why not check it out? You never know. Being that I went so late, I only caught a couple of the deejays. Fortunately, they were the headliners, with the main draw of the evening being DJ Baby Anne. She was pretty good, although since she was playing her own stuff, it really looked like she was just spinning pre-mixed CD’s every 7-8 minutes. I could be wrong about that, but even though the music was alright, the act itself didn’t impress me. I thought DJ Craze was better, but then he’s a turntablist and I can respect that. Still, I regret going.

Honestly, aside from some of the music, it was kind of a lame evening. The deejays I heard were pretty good. What killed me were the ravers. Yeah, ravers. They still exist? I wasn’t into the rave scene at all. I went to a few in the early 90’s, and to be honest, I thought they were dead by 1992. Now that prediction obviously wasn’t the case – raves went mainstream and became big business. However, the rave scene since then has totally faded, and the truth is that Lovefest comes four years too late and out of date to be part of that.

It’s too soon for raves to be “retro.” Seeing all those people buying glow sticks and pre-made light toys, and then walking around with pacifiers and whistles in 2005 was kind of sad. I have no idea what they were doing (other than rolling), but the whole thing just wasn’t cool anymore. What were they doing? Trying to relive the glory days of a poser sub-culture? Sorry if I sound like a hater, but I actually felt embarrassed to be there. I fled to the drum & bass section, but it seemed like the ravers were floating around everywhere. I stayed only as long as it took to make me feel like Lovefest wasn’t a total waste of money, then bailed. I seriously had to get out of there. I really wonder if “raves” like this can still only take place in Hawaii. We’re known for being a little behind the times, but this was just awkward.
