So I’m an old dog.

Last last Friday I went to the Warriors Lounge at the Hale Koa in Waikiki with my girlfriend Lara. Karaoke is sung on a stage there, & Lara was working on her Karaoke Stage Performance skills (hey, why not!). I’ve sung live with a band onstage & been just fine with it, but my little stint on Hawaii Stars (not my idea!) was traumatic, & so I figured I could hone my K.S.P. skills as well. Or at the very least, it would be something different & hopefully interesting.

I have no photos of The Warriors Lounge because I was too shell shocked to remember I had a camera. So… sorry.

Is that how you guys do karaoke on the mainland??? I was tickled at first by the karaoke singers dancing & gesticulating as if they were on tv. As Lara’s mom said, “They’re acting out their dreams.” Oh, cool, cool.

Then the DJ host sang “Proud To Be An American” which I thought was really cheesy. Especially since it seemed to me from the animated standing up & sitting down by certain members of the audience that he sang this on a regular basis. And then “by request” the DJ played The Electric Slide & the same standing up & sitting down regulars made their way to the dance floor. I was still in the “tickled” category but… I don’t know, it had this weird Stepford Wives feeling to it.

And then I just creeped out when someone dressed up in a labcoat & top hat & did a very animatedly dramatized rendition of “The Monster Mash.” I mean, it was entertaining, but… I knew I had to get out of there.

Not wanting to drive through Waikiki On A Friday Night, I had caught ride with Lara. That was dumb. Luckily for me, my friend Kyle joined us for a few beers & then got The Call from our other friends & said I could catch ride out of the circus- er, I mean, out of Waikiki with him.

Maybe it’s because I’m a Taurus. Lara & her mom had no problem with the atmosphere. I, on the other hand, actually felt slightly panicked. Maybe I need a therapist. Another one. Who knows.

So I ended up back at my familiar old Karaoke Hut, with a bunch of rude, scruffy-looking guys (Uh… when did you grow the facial hair, Duane? …And why?) singing obnoxious alternative rock songs while playing touchscreen. Me, I like to sing while leafing through the karaoke book. I almost wanted to kiss the ground when I got into the Hut, but… that would have been retarded. Still, thank God for familiar old places. Maybe I’m just not good at adapting.

Lara sings over here too.

Whenever I hear “Proud to be an American,” I flash back to election 2004. I was at a certain candidate’s victory party when a really drunk filipino guy jumped on the mike and started belting that out that song in a super thick filipino accent. “Prrroud to be on Omericon, wherrrre ot least I know I’m prreee!” It was almost surreal. He had the full Elvis preacher hand thing going on too.
